Laser Tattoo Removal

How does it work?

Tattoos are removed using Q-Switched Nd-Yag laser. A focused beam of light passes harmlessly through the outer layers of skin and is absorbed by the tattoo ink. As the light is absorbed, it is quickly converted to heat. The sudden rise of temperature breaks the ink into tiny particles. These tiny particles are cleared away by the immune system.

Response depends on the tattoo's color, depth, and the chemical composition of the ink. Black, dark blue, red tattoos respond well to laser treatment. Purple, yellow and orange tattoos respond poorly and require more sessions.

The laser selectively targets the undesired ink and does not affect the surrounding skin. Most patients tolerate treatment well and have little discomfort. Patients compare the sensation of laser shots to the snap of a rubber band. If treatment is uncomfortable, topical anesthesia may be used.

Immediately after laser treatment, the treated area becomes white in color and may swell slightly. There might be some redness & slight burning sensation. The whiteness subsides in about 30 minutes. The redness and swelling is minimized by cooling with an ice pack. The tattoo will fade over the next few weeks.

Strict sun protection is recommended before, during and after laser treatment.

Some tattoos may clear in just one session and others may take multiple sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart
